Fines handed down for bait net violations in Central Newfoundland

Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – Four central Newfoundland men were found guilty of bait net violations when they appeared in Grand Falls-Windsor Provincial Court on October 31, 2006.
Clarence Guy of Leading Tickles was convicted of two counts of setting bait nets less than one fathom below the surface of the water and fined a total of $800. Sam Boone and Royburn Budgell of Cottrell’s Cove and Morley Alcock of Botwood were each fined $400 for setting bait nets less than one fathom below the surface of the water.
All individuals were apprehended June 2006 during coastal patrols by fishery officers and fishery guardians from the Springdale Detachment. A condition of herring bait licences prohibits the setting of bait nets less than one fathom below the surface of the water so as to minimize the bycatch of Atlantic salmon.
