FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pontiac, QUEBEC — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and MP for Pontiac, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development , that the federal government will make a contribution of $339,968 to the Sentiers de la flore forestière project of the Centre de recherche et de développement technologique agricole de l’Outaouais (CREDETAO) to help 15 young people acquire skills that will equip them to find jobs.
“Canada ’s New Government is proud to be contributing funding for this project,” said Minister Cannon. “By working with employers, community organizations and other levels of government, Canada ’s New Government is committed to ensuring that Canada ’s youth have an opportunity to develop their skills and gain the job experience required to succeed in today’s workforce.”
The CREDETAO is organizing this tourism project for 15 young dropouts aged 16 to 30. By July 2007, the participants will acquire general employability skills and specific agricultural skills and knowledge to ease their return to the job market. The CREDETAO will work with the public and private sectors to make this initiative a success.
The secondary objective of the Sentiers de la flore forestière project will be to develop a network of four to six kilometres of interpretive trails and landscape on the forest flora implementation site. This will promote the sustainable development of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette area and the Collines-de-l’Outaouais RCM. When the project winds up, 70% of the participants will enter the labour market or return to school and 30% will be redirected to other resources that more effectively meet their needs.
The financial assistance offered for this project by Service Canada comes from the Skills Link component of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. This program enables young people to overcome the barriers to employment by helping them acquire the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to enter the labour market.
