Ottawa - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, together with the City of Ottawa, today hosted local Veterans, Canadian Forces members and students in a Candlelight Tribute on the occasion of Veterans' Week 2006.
The ceremony was held at Lansdowne Park, and included Veterans of the Second World War, Korean War, and peacekeeping missions as well as current members of the Canadian Forces. Veterans and Canadian Forces members were paired with students and, together, they lit candles in memory of those who have served their country during times of war and in peacekeeping operations around the world.
"Each candlelight represents a story of uncommon courage and valour," stated Minister Thompson. "It is our duty to learn more about the often untold stories of how men and women in uniform found the strength to leave their homes and loved ones to fight for the values and way of life we cherish today."
At the ceremony, November 5th to the 11th was declared Veterans' Week by the City of Ottawa.
This is the fifth annual Candlelight Tribute co-hosted by the Government of Canada and the City of Ottawa during Veterans' Week. More information about activities happening in Ottawa and across the country can be found on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site.
