November 29, 2006 (OTTAWA) — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement today in response to a successful series of arrests in Alberta related to an alleged organized crime operation. This crack down follows the successful swoop last week in Montreal. “Once again, policing agencies have worked cooperatively to bust an alleged gang infested, drugs related criminal operation. It has resulted in charges being laid against 18 individuals. As well, numerous firearms, prohibited weapons and assets in excess of $2 million dollars were seized. Working together patiently and methodically, the law enforcement agencies have tirelessly investigated and verified information; put together facts and evidence to make today’s strike another major blow against organized crime. Organized crime touches every area of our lives, our families, our businesses, our possessions, our health, and our bank accounts. Canada’s New Government made tackling crime a priority and we are committed to supporting our law enforcement agencies and ensuring they have all the tools and resources to fulfill their duties effectively.This operation is testimony to the excellent work of the RCMP, the Edmonton Police Service and the Calgary Police Service.
