Winnipeg - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, met today with Veterans at a number of events in Winnipeg, taking the opportunity to recognize and thank them for their contributions.
"We owe Veterans our deepest gratitude for their sacrifices and achievements. We owe them our unwavering support," said Minister Thompson. "Canada's New Government understands this debt, and we are determined to work with Veterans to identify and act on the issues that matter to them."
While in Winnipeg, the Minister met with Veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #215, as well as Army Navy Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) Branch 238. The Minister talked about the work being done to create a Veterans' Bill of Rights and a Veterans' Ombudsman, the Department's current health care review, and the implementation of the New Veterans Charter, launched earlier this year to help modern-day Veterans make a successful and rewarding transition to civilian life.
"Winnipeg, like so many other communities across Canada, is understandably proud of its Veterans and the men and women serving in uniform today," said Minister Thompson. "My visit today confirms that the people of Winnipeg have found many ways to cherish, value, and support the generations of men and women who have served, and continue, to serve our country. A grateful nation never forgets its debts."
While in Winnipeg, Minister Thompson also visited with Veterans at the Deer Lodge Centre and the Operational Stress Injury Clinic and viewed the local Vimy Memorial.
