Ottawa From November 5-11, the Government of Canada is pleased to mark Veterans' Week 2006 with events and activities across the country. With this year's theme, "Share the Story",
Canadians, especially youth, will be encouraged to learn more about Canada's Veterans, to reflect on the service and sacrifice of any Veterans, and to share their thoughts on remembrance with their peers and families.
"I am confident that Veterans' Week 2006 will offer Canadians the chance to meet many of our Veterans, to learn from their stories and to ensure that their remarkable legacy of courage and valour continue to inspire future generations," said the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
Communities across the country will take part in events to mark Veterans' Week, which will include special Remembrance Day Train Rides for Veterans and War Brides, candlelight tributes, musical concerts, theatrical productions, and exhibitions.
In Ottawa, events will include a Remembrance Ceremony in the Senate of Canada, the unveiling of the Valiants Memorial, a Candlelight Tribute at the Civic Centre, and the annual "Canada Remembers" theme week at Encounters With Canada. The week will conclude with the Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11th at the National War Memorial. Similar ceremonies will be held at cenotaphs in cities and towns across Canada.
Veterans Affairs Canada has also produced a package of educational materials to bring Veterans' Week and the important messages of remembrance into Canadian classrooms. All Canadians, especially youth and community organizations, are encouraged to participate in and to initiate Veteran's Week activities in their local communities.
