Québec City, December 21, 2006 - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Québec City Detachment seized counterfeit DVDs and video games,
pirated software, computers and even a rifle during two searches conducted
on December 19 in the region. Two suspects have been arrested in relation
to this operation. Charges should be laid against them.
Twelve federal officers, with the co-operation of the Canadian Motion
Picture Distributors Association, took part in the searches. A first
search was conducted in a Québec City business where a man was
put under arrest. A second surprise visit was made in a private residence
of the Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier area where a woman was
arrested.
Loaded rifle
Police seized close to 400 counterfeit video games and 270 counterfeit
DVDs, 240 copies of software, 60 computers, two hard disks, a DVD player,
a printer, a screen, and blank DVDs, for a total value of $80,000.
They also found a loaded .22 caliber rifle on the premises. The investigation,
undertaken a little over two months ago, is still ongoing to gather
further evidence which should enable the RCMP to lay charges.
The illegal production and sale of DVDs and other counterfeit goods
account for losses of millions of dollars annually. Consequently, the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police invites citizens to report any information
on suspect activities by calling (418) 648-3733. All tips are kept confidential.
