Canada's New Government Allocates $1.5 Million Budget for the Economic Revitalization of La Baie

La Baie, Quebec, December 21, 2006 The
Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of
Canada Economic Development, today announced in a news conference that
the community of La Baie will receive a budget allocation of $1.5 million
over three years to help boost its economy.
This measure will serve to support business projects that
create sustainable jobs. A committee composed of local representatives and civil
servants from Canada Economic Development and other economic
departments will be established to oversee and coordinate the implementation of
this government initiative.
"This measure is meant to provide concrete support to the
La Baie business community and population at large, who have spared no
effort in their attempts to revitalize their local economy. In the view of
Canada's new government, the solutions to the main challenges of the day must
come, first and foremost, from those who confront these challenges day in and
day out. That is why this initiative calls for the mobilization of all concerned
in identifying those projects that will best foster the economic diversification
of La Baie," commented Minister Blackburn.
Examples of projects that could receive funding under
this initiative include the start-up, expansion or modernization of an
enterprise; the market introduction of a product; entrepreneurship support
projects; initiatives aimed at arming a region with competitive advantages; and
strategic watch and R&D projects in priority sectors to support initiatives
offering strong development potential.
Minister Blackburn took the opportunity to highlight
the exemplary spirit of cooperation shown by the various regional stakeholders
throughout the process leading to the establishment of this $1.5 million
budget.
This measure is funded under
Canada Economic Development's
Community Economic Diversification
Initiative Vitality (CEDI-VITALITY). Canada Economic Development is
dedicated to promoting the long-term economic development of the regions of
Quebec by placing particular emphasis on those where slow economic growth is
prevalent or opportunities for productive employment inadequate.
