OTTAWA-The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced that the Government of Canada will invest $621,000 in a Canadian Police Sector Council project aimed at addressing the human resources needs of the Canadian policing community.
The announcement was made on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women at the Canadian Police College-an internationally recognized professional learning centre for members of the Canadian and international policing community.
"Canada's New Government is proud to announce funding for this project, which will ensure that Canadian communities have a highly trained, effective police force to keep streets safe," said Minister Finley.
The Canadian Police Sector Council will receive funding for the project through the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program. The project will undertake research in four areas that were identified as being crucial to the policing sector-competency frameworks, recruitment practices, leadership development, and education training. This research will lead to the establishment of best practices, as well as the development of a pan-Canadian strategy addressing these four key areas.
"The Police Sector Council is delighted Minister Finley is supporting this important project at this critical time in policing," said Geoff Gruson, the Executive Director of the Police Sector Council. "This project will provide the Board of Directors a solid baseline of information on the costs and impacts of recruitment, education, training, leadership development, and competency activities across Canada. It will also enable strategies for long term sustainability of enhanced policing in this country."
Sector councils are designed to meet emerging skills requirements, address skills and labour shortages, and build essential skills in the workplace as a foundation for continuous learning. They are organizations that bring together governments, business, and labour and educational stakeholders in key sectors to share ideas, concerns, and perspectives about human resources and skills issues. Their goal is to find solutions that benefit the sector in a collective, collaborative, and sustained manner.
Sector councils play a vital role in helping to strengthen the Canadian labour market, thereby contributing to the productivity and competitiveness of the Canadian economy and the standard of living of all Canadians.
