MONTRÉAL, December 4, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Michael M. Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister Responsible for the Montréal Region, today announced funding for the Théâtre de Quat'Sous. It will enable reconstruction of the theatre and the purchase of new specialized equipment.
"A leader in the creation, production, and distribution of Canadian theatre, the Théâtre de Quat'Sous has continually demonstrated daring and innovation since its creation," said Minister Oda. "I am proud to support the modernization of this worthy cultural institution whose reputation extends beyond our borders."
"With the reconstruction of this institution and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, theatre-lovers can continue enjoying a wide range of stirring, quality productions," said Minister Fortier. I am pleased that Canada's new Government supports an institution that contributes so much to Montréal's cultural life."
Established in 1955, the Théâtre de Quat'Sous will be rebuilt on the site of the current theatre. This project will enable the company to offer artists a larger production and performance space that respects professional standards. A rehearsal hall will also be added.
Canada's New Government has provided $611,559 in funding through the Department of Canadian Heritage and its Cultural Spaces Canada Program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts or that improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.
