QUEBEC CITY-Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has published the list of fishers fined for various offences under the Fisheries Act.
In all, the fines assessed totalled $84,496 for fishers in the three maritime Area, Magdalen Islands, Gaspé-Lower St. Lawrence and North Shore. Some gear and other goods used in the fishing activities were also seized and the proceeds from the sale of illegally caught fish were forfeited.
In the Magdalen Islands, fines totalling $2,750 were assessed on offenders under the Fisheries Act. In the Gaspé-Lower St. Lawrence Area, the total amount of fines was $57,020. Lastly, on the North Shore, a total of $24,726 in fines were handed down to offenders. The fines ranged from $100 to $19,010. The offences committed ranged from shellfish harvesting in closed areas, to non-compliance with licence conditions, to conspiracy, in a snow crab poaching case.
