OTTAWA - The Honourable Gordon O’Connor, Minister of National Defence and Chancellor of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), is pleased to announce that Dr. John Cowan has agreed to continue to serve, and has been appointed by the Governor-in-Council, as RMC Principal.
“This appointment stands as a testament to Dr. Cowan’s professionalism and skill,” said O’Connor, “and I am confident he will continue to lead the College with distinction.”
Dr. Cowan holds an MSc (Math and Physics) and PhD (Physiology). He has fulfilled the role of Principal since 1999, based on an extensive national search, and a recommendation to the Board of Governors.
Dr. Cowan served in a number of prominent positions before joining the College including Vice-Rector of the University of Ottawa, Vice-Principal of Queen’s University at Kingston, and Senior Advisor on Labour Relations and Human Resources issues to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
Situated in Kingston, Ontario, RMC is the central academic institution of the Canadian Forces (CF). Opened in 1876, the College now offers undergraduate and graduate level programs, certificate programs and continuing studies and research. These programs are available to all members of the CF, their families and National Defence civilian employees.
The Board of Governors of the Royal Military College of Canada reports to the Minister of National Defence; it provides advice and recommendations on matters relating to RMC, as well as reviewing the strategic direction of the College.
