Government of Canada Releases Findings of the Panel for the Eastmain-1-A and Rupert Diversion Project

OTTAWA, December 5, 2006 - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency), released today an executive summary and the recommendations of the Federal Review Panel’s (the Panel) report for the Eastmain-1-A and Rupert Diversion Project.
“Our social and economic well being is directly related to how we treat the environment”, Minister Ambrose said. “The report of the Federal Review Panel for this major project will assist our Government in making informed decisions that will achieve a healthy environment and a healthy economy.”
The Government of Canada will now take the time required to carefully review the Panel’s recommendations. Transport Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the federal responsible authorities for this project, will prepare the government’s response to the report and submit it to the Cabinet for approval. The response will then be made public.
The executive summary and recommendations are available in both official languages on the Agency’s Web site. The full report will be available as soon as possible.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
