Groundfish Ice Fishing on the Saguenay River - 2007 Season

QUEBEC CITY - Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, hereby wishes to notify
the public that the groundfish ice fishing season in the Saguenay Fjord will open on Monday
January 15, 2007 and close on Monday March 12, 2007. A quota of five groundfish
(all species combined) per person per day will be in effect. Any Atlantic halibut that are
caught must be returned to the water.
The status of marine resources harvested in the Saguenay remains worrisome. Consequently,
this year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is seeking the co-operation of fishers in collecting
data on catches. Reliable catch data and greater biological knowledge of the Saguenay Fjord
are essential for ensuring the sound management of this activity and the conservation of
stocks.
In order to ensure the sustainability of marine resources and permit the continuity of this
recreational fishery in the future, monitoring by the Department's fisheries officers will be
increased.
The Canadian Coast Guard strongly recommends that pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers
get off the ice when an icebreaker is in the immediate vicinity during the ice fishing season.
Ice movement could occur and pose a real danger to anyone in the vessel's operational area.
Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations on the Saguenay River should normally begin at
8:00 a.m., Tuesday March 13 2007.
