OTTAWA, December 22, 2006 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and
Granny’s Poultry Co-Operative (Manitoba) Ltd. are advising the public that a single incident of
suspected tampering of Granny’s brand fresh young turkey was reported in
Ottawa, Ontario.
An Ottawa resident has reported finding metal pins in a turkey which was
cooked at home. The consumer found the pins while slicing the cooked turkey. No
injuries were reported in this incident.
The affected turkey was a fresh turkey. The package identified this turkey
as a Granny's brand ready to cook fresh young turkey and bears the
following information on the label: Best Before 06 DE 27 and Est # 137. It
was sold from a Loblaws Store in Kanata, Ontario. This brand of turkey,
however, is distributed nationally.
To date, with the full cooperation of the retailer and the manufacturer, 505
packaged turkeys from the Ottawa retail store and a Manitoba warehouse have
been examined and no additional pins have been found. The evidence gathered to
date indicates a very high probability that this is an isolated incident. The
CFIA will continue
its investigation should new information be received.
Consumers should, however, be aware and vigilant. Consumers should check
turkeys and call the CFIA number listed below if they
have food safety concerns. Signs that a turkey has been tampered with may
include, for example, unusual cuts or holes on the packages, finding of
extraneous material while slicing and abnormal discoloration of meat.
This incident has been referred to the police.
