OTTAWA, January 30, 2007 - The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), today appointed Dr. Danielle Laberge as a member of the Council.
"Dr. Laberge's years in academia and first hand knowledge of research grant programs will provide the Council with valuable insights that will help further university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities," said Minister Bernier.
Dr. Danielle Laberge is currently the Interim President of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She has also served as Vice-Rector (Academic), Executive Vice-Rector and Professor of Sociology at UQAM and held the position of Director, Advanced Studies Program in Sociology with the same university. Dr. Laberge has been an Invited Researcher at the National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris, France, as well as an Invited Professor with the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium.
Dr. Laberge has been the recipient of research grants from SSHRC and the Conseil québécois de la recherche sociale.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations to focus research and aid the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada's social, cultural and economic life.
