OTTAWA - The Canadian Forces Chaplain General, in conjunction with the US European Command, will host the 18th annual International Chiefs of Chaplains Conference from February 5-9, 2007. This important gathering of chaplains from over thirty countries will take place in Ottawa, marking the first time the conference has been held on Canadian soil.
The purpose of the conference is for military chaplains from all major religious faiths to share their experiences and best practices, work towards increased interoperability and meet the challenges of providing religious support to men and women who are serving overseas.
"There’s a wide range of emotion that people feel on deployments," said Brig.-Gen. Stan Johnstone, Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces, “and the presence of the chaplain is to remind people of the aspects of life that are hopeful and encouraging, even when the exigencies of life seem so difficult.”
He added, “This year’s conference will explore the shared spirituality of our nations and will be particularly meaningful in view of the increasing number of Canadian Forces members now serving on operations around the world.”
The Canadian Forces chaplaincy is well-experienced in providing support to deployed soldiers in stressful operations and Canadian chaplains have been part of every significant deployment of troops around the world.
“Our chaplains have shared all the stresses and challenges of overseas missions and they continue to provide critical support to the families of our brave soldiers that remain behind,” said General Rick Hillier, Chief of Defence Staff. “This conference will provide an important forum to exchange ideas with our international community so that we can continue to provide spiritual support for all members of the Canadian Forces family,” he added.
