QUEBEC CITYFisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has published the
list of fishers fined for various offences under the Fisheries Act.
The total amount of fines assessed on fishers in the Magdalen Islands, Gaspé/Lower
St. Lawrence and North Shore marine sectors comes to $45,000. Some gear and other
goods used in the fishing activities were also seized and the proceeds from the
sale of illegally caught fish were forfeited.
In the Magdalen Islands, fines totalling $5,400 were assessed on offenders under
the Fisheries Act. In the GaspéLower St. Lawrence Area, the total amount
of fines was $23,550. Lastly, on the North Shore, a total of $16,050 in fines were
handed down to offenders. Fines vary from $200 to $15,000 for such offences as harvesting
shellfish in closed areas, fishing without a licence, non-compliance with licence
conditions, and conspiracy.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is mandated to protect and conserve marine resources
and is ever alert for any poaching of marine resources.
