$20,000 in Contraband Cigarettes Seized by the RCMP
Rimouski, Wednesday, February 7, 2007 Yesterday,
police officers of the Lower St. Lawrence Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Detachment and
their partners of the Sûreté du Québec, Rimouski
Investigations Office and Avignon de Matapédia Detachment, seized
contraband cigarettes and arrested two suspects.
The investigation was initiated last November after an individual was
observed selling unstamped tobacco products at discount prices in Rimouski.
Operation Cunaxa was launched by the RCMP and SQ and led to the seizure
of 20 cases of unstamped cigarettes worth $20,000. The police also seized
a vehicle valued at approximately $20,000.
Two subjects were arrested. They will face charges of unlawful possession
and sale of cigarettes that were not stamped in accordance with the provisions
of the Excise Act 2001. One of the subjects arrested will also be charged
with breach of probation.
