Killarney, Manitoba – Killarney and area residents will
soon be able to get more active with a new multi-purpose recreation facility
with $1.5 million in funding from Canada’s New Government, the Province
of Manitoba and the local communities, through the Canada-Manitoba Municipal
Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The Honourable Scott Smith, Minister of Competitiveness, Training and
Trade, on behalf of the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Minister of Infrastructure
and Transportation and Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris,
on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s
Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister
of Western Economic Diversification, made the announcement today.
“This is a major-league development for the Killarney area which
will see the creation of a new arena, curling rink, bowling alley and
recreation centre,” said Minister Smith. “Not only will this
community-driven project see the replacement of aging facilities that
are beyond repair, it will also create a new structure that will meet
the LEED silver standard for a high performance, green building.”
“Through this joint contribution of $1.5 million, Canada’s
New Government is promoting a more healthy and active community here in
Killarney,” said MP Merv Tweed. “We are getting things done
by investing in projects that will leave real and lasting benefits for
families and communities.”
The Killarney and District Multi-purpose Facility will include a skating
area, curling rink, community hall, fitness centre, bowling lanes and
walking/running track. The new multi-function building replaces existing
facilities that are beyond repair and plans are for the new structure
to feature environmentally friendly heating and water systems that will
produce no greenhouse gas emissions as well as reduce water consumption
by about 30 percent.
“The Municipality of Killarney–Turtle Mountain wishes to
thank both the Federal and Provincial Governments for their generous support
to our community project,” said Mayor Brian Moore. “The Municipal
Rural Infrastructure Fund will help to promote healthy living in Killarney
– Turtle Mountain and surrounding area.”
More specific details of the other projects receiving contributions
through MRIF will be revealed at events with local partners held throughout
the province over the coming weeks. The projects being announced support
MRIF’s green and recreation project categories.
The Canada-Manitoba Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) is investing
a total of $120 million in communities across Manitoba. Of the total funds,
80 percent of MRIF is earmarked for communities with a population under
250,000, including 198 municipalities and 50 unincorporated Northern Community
Councils in rural and northern Manitoba. The remaining 20 percent is for
communities with populations over 250,000.
