OTTAWA, March 19, 2007 The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and
Canada Bread Company Limited are warning people with allergies to almonds not to
consume Dempster's WholeGrains Prebiotic Barley & Sunflower bread
purchased in Ontario. The affected product may contain almonds which are not
declared on the label.
The affected product, Dempster's WholeGrains Prebiotic Barley &
Sunflower bread, is sold in 680 g loaves and was distributed in Ontario only. It
has a "best before date" of MR 25 (March 25, 2007), which can be found on the
tan-coloured kwik-lock tag at the end of the product. The product bears the UPC
0 68721 00262 8. No other Dempster's WholeGrains products are affected by
this alert.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this
product.
Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to
almonds.
The manufacturer, Canada Bread Company Limited, Etobicoke, Ontario, is
voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is
monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
If consumers have the affected product, they should call 1-800-568-5801 to
have that product replaced or return the product to the store it was purchased
from for a full refund or product replacement.
