OTTAWA -- The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointments of Mr. James G. Doody
and Mr. John J. Henley to the board of directors of Marine Atlantic Inc.
"I am pleased to announce the appointments of these capable and experienced
individuals," said Minister Cannon. "They bring a wealth of knowledge in the
areas of public administration and marine engineering respectively, which will
be a great asset to the corporation."
Mr. James G. Doody is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland's
business administration co-op program, and became a chartered accountant in
1989. He currently is chief executive officer of King Group of Companies in St.
John's, Newfoundland. He previously worked in finance and administration for the
public sector, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as
Newfoundland school boards. Mr. Doody has been appointed to the board of
directors of Marine Atlantic Inc. for a term of four years.
Mr. John J. Henley holds masters of science degrees in ocean engineering and
ocean systems management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a
bachelor of mechanical engineering degree from Memorial University of
Newfoundland. He currently is vice president, offshore services and corporate
development, for G.J. Cahill Group of Companies. Mr. Henley has worked for a
number of Canadian oil and gas companies as an engineer, and has held senior
positions with Hibernia Management and Development, and Newfoundland
Transshipment Limited. Mr. Henley has been appointed to the board of directors
of Marine Atlantic Inc. for a term of four years.
Marine Atlantic Inc., a Crown corporation, was created in 1986 to operate the
ferry service between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North
Sydney, Nova Scotia and fulfills a constitutional obligation for Canada. Marine
Atlantic Inc. also provides a summer season service between Argentia,
Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The corporation has a
board of directors responsible for overseeing the corporation's management and
ensuring that Marine Atlantic's activities are in line with federal government
priorities.
In 2006, the company's vessels carried more than 405,000 passengers and 88,000
commercial vehicles. The corporation remains fully committed to providing safe,
environmentally responsible and efficient ferry services between Newfoundland
and Labrador and Nova Scotia.
