The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic
Canada Opportunities Agency, today made the following statement following the
second round of presidential elections in Mauritania:
“Canada is very encouraged by the development of democracy and good governance in
Mauritania. Canada congratulates the people of Mauritania in conducting free and fair
elections, as these mark an important moment in Mauritania’s history.
“We hope that the success of the electoral process in Mauritania will encourage other
Arab and African nations to embark on the path to freedom and democracy.
“Mauritania is a member of the International Organization of La Francophonie, and we
look forward to the newly elected president’s participation at the 2008 Summit in
