Canada's New Government Investing in Nova Scotia's Harbours

News Release

March 5, 2007
Dublin Shore, N.S. Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore--St.
Margaret's, today announced that Canada's New Government is providing $79,300 in
funding for repairs and improvements at two fishing harbours in southern Nova Scotia.
Mr. Keddy made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister
of Fisheries and Oceans.
"These improvements will make repairing and launching vessels considerably easier,"
said Mr. Keddy. "Canada's New Government is committed to supporting fishers whose
work is essential to the prosperity of our province."
This funding makes possible reconstruction of the ground-out bed at Dublin Shore
and construction of a new one at Shag Harbour.
A ground-out bed, which consists of a concrete slab built on grade, serves as
a working platform for fishers to undertake maintenance on their vessels. At low
tide, the vessel is placed on a cradle for the necessary work. These projects will
greatly assist fishers by allowing them to inspect and service their vessels in
a timely manner. A ground-out bed may also be used to facilitate the launch of vessels.
The Harbour Authority of Shag Harbour and the Dublin Shore community group were
successful in obtaining a further $10,000 each from the provincial government for
their projects.
The $79,300 federal investment, combined with projects previously announced by
Canada's New Government, brings the support from Small Craft Harbours in Nova Scotia
this year to $17.5 million.
These projects are being implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of
its Small Craft Harbours Program in cooperation with the Harbour Authorities that
manage and operate the facilities for local users. This close cooperation with clients
and communities allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable
system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
