WINNIPEG, March 14, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Joy Smith, Member of Parliament (Kildonan-St. Paul), today announced funding of up to $225,000 over three years for Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. These funds will enable the group to create the Iskwewak Women's Leadership Development Project, a women-centered and culturally relevant program that will provide participants with a range of healing opportunities, as well as leadership and community development skills.
"Canada's New Government is committed to improving the quality of life for First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples," said Minister Oda. "This investment will increase opportunities for Aboriginal women, which will help them to fully participate in their communities."
"Our Government is proud to support projects that benefit Aboriginal women socially and culturally," said Mrs. Smith. "I commend Ka Ni Kanichihk for its ongoing efforts to help these women meet the challenges they face."
"Women have always held important roles in Aboriginal society; as mothers, caregivers, teachers, leaders and nation builders," said Leslie Spillett, Executive Director of Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. "The Iskwewak (Women's) Leadership Development project will ensure that we can continue to support the development of strong women, healthy families and safe communities."
Funding for this three-year project will support workshops and training sessions for Aboriginal women that will allow them to identify and implement strategies to reduce violence against women; to increase leadership skills and development opportunities; and to strengthen their Indigenous identity and understanding of traditional forms of leadership in Aboriginal cultures.
Canada's New Government has provided this funding through the Aboriginal Peoples' Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program supports the full participation and cultural revitalization of Aboriginal People in Canadian society. It enables Aboriginal peoples to address the social, cultural, economic and political issues affecting their lives.
