Val-d'Or, Quebec, March 28, 2007 The
Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of
Canada Economic Development, today announced a $14,400 non-repayable
contribution to the Conseil du loisir scientifique de
l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue, for the staging of the 8th edition of the
science and technology fair (Salon science et technologie), to be held
March 30-31, 2007, at École La Source in Rouyn-Noranda.
The goal of the fair is to bring together individuals with a passion for
science and technology to promote those sectors to young people, who will also
have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and know-how. This event
offers the region's inventors, innovators and enterprises a prime showcase for
their expertise in science and technology, too.
"I believe this fair can have a significant impact in motivating young people
to go into the sciences in the regions, and eventually to remain there, to the
benefit of the SMEs which generate economic spinoffs," stated
Minister Blackburn. "It is a significant link in ensuring that we have
a younger generation who are competent and motivated in the fields of science
and technology, sectors that are extremely important for the future
competitiveness of the resource regions."
"Aimed at all ages, the science and technology fair is the only regional
showcase focussing on innovation, science and technology that affords innovative
companies the opportunity to present their achievements to the public, while
developing contacts with various organizations and enterprises also operating in
that field," stated Suzanne Tamsé, President of the Conseil du loisir
scientifique de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue. "Furthermore, the fair also gives
young and not-so-young people a unique opportunity to take part in various
scientific and technological activities and visit a number of booths which
present the spirit and potential of our lovely region. The staging of this fair
is absolutely necessary in order to develop and increase the
public's scientific culture."
