MIDLAND, Ontario, March 9, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Bruce Stanton, Member of Parliament (Simcoe North), today announced $24,900 in funding for the Huronia Museum. The funds will be dedicated to a feasibility study for a long-term expansion plan for the museum.
"Museums such as this one showcase our rich cultural heritage and make it accessible to all Canadians," said Minister Oda. "That is why Canada's New Government is very pleased to support the Huronia Museum. This investment is important to the Midland area as it will benefit the community and visitors."
"This museum is a key attraction in the Town of Midland, and Canada's New Government is pleased to support it," said Mr. Stanton. "The Huronia Museum houses a collection that vividly captures the history of southern Georgian Bay from the time of the Ouendat."
"Huronia Museum is eager to begin work on the feasibility study of expansion plans to its current facility. This opportunity to determine the best and most sustainable strategy to maintain and possibly expand relevant heritage preservation services for our community would not have been possible without the support of the Cultural Spaces Canada program," said Nahanni Born, Administrator for Huronia Museum.
The Huronia Museum houses collections that feature Huron and Ojibway cultural history, art and artists from the Georgian Bay Region, the marine history of Georgian Bay, and the local history of the people, communities, and industries that have served the region for the past four hundred years.
Canada's New Government has provided this financial support through the Cultural Spaces Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts, and to museum collections, heritage displays and exhibitions. Funding is also provided for the construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities.
