Canada's New Government Supports the Writers' Trust of Canada

OTTAWA, March 8, 2007 - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women announced financial support of $10,000 for the Writers' Trust of Canada. The funds helped the Trust to organize the annual presentation of The Writers' Trust Awards, intended to honour Canadian writers and highlight their successes, which was held yesterday.
"Our authors, poets and writers do a wonderful job of enriching our knowledge and fuelling our imagination," said Minister Oda. "This is why Canada's New Government is proud not only to support them through its programs, but also to provide funding for the The Writers' Trust Awards to celebrate their successes."
The Writers' Trust of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides financial support to Canadian writers and offers various programs to recognize their talent. The Writers' Trust Awards presentation was held on March 7, 2007, at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto.
"On behalf of the Writers' Trust, we are grateful to Canadian Heritage for its support of our awards ceremony. This funding will aid us in alerting Canadians to the tremendous accomplishments of our nations' finest and most talented writers," said Don Oravec, Executive Director of Writer's Trust of Canada.
Canada's New Government has provided this funding through the Collective Initiatives (Marketing and Promotion) component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program. This Department of Canadian Heritage program seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.
