March 26, 2007
OTTAWAHer Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will receive a bouquet of daffodils from two young cancer patients to mark the beginning of the Canadian Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Month, and the 50th year it has sold daffodils in aid of cancer research. The bouquet presentation will take place at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, in the greenhouses of Rideau Hall.
The daffodil is the Canadian Cancer Society's symbol of hope in the fight against cancer, and during the past half-century huge strides have been made. Survival rates among children, for example, have risen by more than 50 per cent.
Daffodil Month, which takes place in April, will also feature the Canadian Cancer Society's annual door-to-door canvass. The fundraising campaign not only supports cutting-edge research, but also raises awareness about cancer prevention and the Canadian Cancer Society's many community services. The month begins with Daffodil Days, from March 29 to April 1. Volunteers will be selling yellow blooms to raise funds in the hope of making cancer history.
