Henri Lanctôt Appointed to the Competition Tribunal

OTTAWA, March 7, 2007 -- The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Competition Tribunal, today appointed Mr. Henri Lanctôt as a lay member of the Tribunal.
"The lay members of the Tribunal offer their assistance, in their areas of expertise, in the hearing and decisions of all applications," said Minister Bernier. "Mr. Lanctôt's background in law enables the Tribunal to benefit from his expertise and will help ensure sound decisions are made in this area."
Mr. Henri Lanctôt is a lawyer with Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP in Montréal and has been practising law for over 38 years. Previously, Mr. Lanctôt held the positions of house counsel with Texaco Canada Inc. and general counsel to the Société québécoise d'exploration minière. His expertise ranges from public and private securities offerings, project financing, mergers and acquisitions to joint ventures. Mr. Lanctôt is a member of the Québec Bar and the Canadian Bar Association.
The Competition Tribunal is a specialized tribunal that hears and decides all applications made under Parts VII.1 and VIII of the Competition Act as informally and quickly as the circumstances and consideration of fairness allow. The Tribunal is a strictly adjudicative body that operates independently of any government department.
