St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador - April 3, 2007 - The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced $385,997 in funding for seven innovative projects that will have a tangible and lasting impact on learners in Newfoundland and Labrador. "Canada's New Government is proud to work with our partner organizations on literacy projects that will have a tangible and lasting impact on adult learners here in Newfoundland and Labrador," stated Minister Hearn. "With today's $386,000 investment, we are supporting initiatives that will improve literacy skills and build better lives."
Minister Hearn made the announcement in St. John's, where he participated in an event hosted by the Community Centre Alliance. The funding will enable Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador, Teachers on Wheels Incorporated, Partners in Learning, PRINTS Family Literacy Network, Random North Development Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council, and the Community Centre Alliance to develop, pilot and deliver literacy programs and tools.
Literacy skills can be developed in various settings: the family, the school, the workplace or the community. Literacy levels affect self-esteem, health and safety, and are a strong factor in helping Canadians find and maintain employment.
By funding these projects, Canada's government is supporting learning and literacy activities that have a tangible and lasting impact on adult learners.
Human Resources and Social Development Canada also supports literacy and essential skills development through other programs, such as the essential skills initiative and support for sector councils and apprenticeships.
A list of projects approved for funding is included in the attached backgrounder.
