Canada's New Government Announces Deployment of Law Enforcement Officers to Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN, April, 2 2007 - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced the recent deployment of 12 Canadian civilian police officers to help train and assist the Afghanistan National Police. The recent deployment of these officers now brings the total number of Canadian civilian and military police in Afghanistan to 36.Minister Day made the announcement while taking the opportunity to visit Canadian troops and law enforcement on the ground and commending them for the excellent work they are doing to bring peace and stability to the people of Afghanistan."These Canadian civilian police have been deployed to Afghanistan to help train the Afghan National Police and work in close cooperation with other international policing partners,” said Minister Day. "Our contributions and support will help the Afghan Government develop a professional, civilian police force that can fight crime and criminal activities." Canadian civilian police are instructing the Afghanistan National Police in areas such as weapons training, improvised explosive device first responder training and vehicle checkpoint procedures. Thanks to their advice, Canada’s Global Peace and Security Fund was able to provide uniforms and other essential policing equipment to the Afghanistan National Police in southern Afghanistan. The police officers are also helping to improve the living and working conditions at six local Afghanistan National Police stations. "Canada's New Government believes our police are playing an important role in promoting Canadian values such as the rule of law and human rights, and will help to bring stability and peace to Afghanistan," concluded Minister Day. This announcement complements other Canadian efforts to assist the police force in Afghanistan. These include investments in the Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan that will ensure Afghan National Police receive salaries, and other announcements providing equipment and uniforms. In addition to the policing support, Canada is also assisting in developing the Afghan Central Prison Department through Correctional Services of Canada (CSC).Two correctional experts were deployed earlier this year to assist in the training and mentoring of staff and prison administrators.
