BRANDON, MANITOBA, April 2, 2007-Mr. Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced funding of $33,000 for the Westman Recovery Inc. project. Funding is being provided under the National Homelessness Initiative (NHI).
"Canada's New Government is pleased to support community efforts that help people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless recover from alcoholism or addictions," said Mr. Tweed. "We are proud to be partners with Westman Recovery, an organization that is working diligently to help people rebuild their lives."
Through this project, Westman Recovery Inc. will undertake necessary renovations to their ten-unit transition facility, a home for people recovering from substance abuse. Each resident will develop a personal recovery plan, including selecting a sponsor and attending 12-step recovery meetings.
Canada's New Government launched the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS), on April 1, 2007. It replaces the National Homelessness Initiative.
The new HPS is providing $269.6 million over two years to help communities across Canada combat homelessness more effectively. The Strategy focuses on a housing-first approach to homelessness, recognizing that housing stability is essential to self-sufficiency and full participation in Canadian society. With its clear goals of improved partnerships, enhanced sustainability and tangible results, the new strategy will provide concrete, meaningful and lasting results for Canadians in need.
