Canada's New Government Grants $150,000 in Funding to Optosecurity Inc.

Québec, Quebec, April 10, 2007 The
Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of
Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $150,000
in repayable funding to Optosecurity Inc. to enable the firm to increase
its strategic capabilities and become known as a world leader in the security
products industry.
Based in the city of Québec, Optosecurity specializes in the development of
automatic weapons and explosives detection systems for use in airport luggage
screening processes. Its newest product, the OptoScreener, is capable of
detecting weapons made of new materials that would otherwise not be identifiable
to the human eye through x-ray scanning alone. The firm, with its 40 some
employees operating in highly-specialized sectors, works in close partnership
with the Institut national d'optique (INO) in its research and
development activities.
Optosecurity Inc. will invest $730,000 in this latest project. "The financial
assistance we are announcing today reflects the determination of
Canada's new government to facilitate the growth of small and medium-sized
businesses in Quebec and help them become more competitive on the international
stage. This initiative by Canada Economic Development seeks to foster
the development of a hub of excellence in optics-photonics in the Québec region
and encourage both technology-based entrepreneurship and the marketing of
Canadian innovations. In so doing, we are also promoting technology developed at
the INO, a research facility that benefits from Agency funding," stated
Minister Blackburn.
"We are proud of the support we receive from the Government of Canada. It is
thanks to funding from a number of federal departments and agencies that
Optosecurity has been able to position Canada as the world leader in threat
detection in such areas as liquid explosives," noted Optosecurity President
and CEO Éric Bergeron.
