FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EDMONTON, ALBERTA —The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced $366,292 in funding for Peacebuilders, a program run by the Youth Canada Association (YOUCAN) designed to help youth at risk become role models for other youth in Edmonton.
“Canada's New Government is proud to support a project that will provide counseling and other resources for at-risk young people here in Edmonton,” said Minister Solberg. “You Can! will be an effective project to provide young people with the life skills they need to find and keep employment or return to a school or training program.”
As part of the Peacebuilders program, youth participate in a series of workshops and courses that teach conflict resolution, life skills, resume-writing and interview skills, as well as take part in a weekly community kitchen. Towards the end of the program, participants will then develop and facilitate conflict resolution workshops for other youth in the community.
Service Canada is funding this project through Skills Link, one of Canada’s youth employment programs. Canada’s New Government is committed to improving opportunities for youth. It works with employers, community organizations and other levels of government to ensure all young people have the opportunity to develop their skills and become contributing members of their communities.
