NIPIGON, Ontario, April 12, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today announced funding of up to $47,700 to the Township of Nipigon for the Nipigon Historic Museum. The project will allow the Township of Nipigon to purchase new and upgraded display cases, to support the region's overall downtown revitalization plan, and to provide better environmental conditions for artifacts.
"Canada's museums play an important role in preserving our heritage," said Minister Oda. "Our support for the Nipigon Historic Museum reflects that Canada's New Government is committed to enabling our museums to safeguard precious collections for generations to come."
"We are proud to support the Township of Nipigon to purchase equipment that will ensure better conditions for the Museum's artifacts," said Minister Clement. "Supporting this project will make a significant contribution to strengthening and maintaining the region's unique cultural heritage."
The Nipigon Historical Museum collects, preserves, researches, and houses the objects that best serve to illustrate the region's history. The Museum's main focus is on the history of the area's lands and its Aboriginal population. Clean, secure, high-quality cases will benefit exhibited artifacts and enhance public appreciation of the collection.
Canada's New Government is providing financial assistance through the Cultural Spaces Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program seeks to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. The program increases access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and to museum collections and heritage displays. The program supports the improvement, renovation and construction of arts and heritage facilities, the acquisition of specialized equipment, and the conduct of feasibility studies.
