April 26, 2007 (OTTAWA) — Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement in response to the breakdown of negotiations regarding the Canada and United States (U.S.) agreement on land pre-clearance pilot projects. “Canada will not consider any proposal that does not comply with Canadian law. From early on in the negotiations, both parties agreed that an agreement would respect the laws of the country hosting the pre-clearance area. Canadian and U.S. laws differ in terms of the conditions under which fingerprints can be collected. This proved to be an obstacle in reaching an agreement. Canada will not consider any proposal that would diminish the basic individual rights of Canadians. I would like to assure Canadians that with or without this agreement, Canada’s New Government continues to work with the U.S. to ensure that our borders facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
