(Gatineau, Quebec, April 2, 2007) - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) appeared before the Railway Safety Act Review Advisory Panel this morning. This was an opportunity for the Board to bring forward its views on issues that may need to be considered to improve railway safety, including possible amendments to the Railway Safety Act. "We have a number of concrete suggestions to help improve rail safety for the benefit of all Canadians and it will be my pleasure to share them with the panel today," said Mrs. Wendy A. Tadros, Chair of the TSB.
On December 14, 2006, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced a full review of the Railway Safety Act. The objective of the review is to further improve railway safety in Canada and promote a safety culture within the railway industry, while preserving and strengthening the vital role this industry plays in the Canadian economy.
As an independent federal agency, the TSB is not associated with Transport Canada. The mandate of the TSB is to conduct independent investigations into selected accidents in the marine, pipeline, rail and air modes of transportation, identify safety deficiencies, and make recommendations to eliminate or reduce such deficiencies. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety.
