OTTAWA — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Yves Filion to the board of directors of the Montreal Port Authority for a period of three years.
"I am very pleased that Mr. Filion has agreed to serve on the Montreal Port Authority's board of directors,” said Minister Cannon. "His experience and expertise will serve the board well.”
Mr. Filion holds a degree in applied science from the Université de Sherbrooke and has completed several management courses, including a program at the International Centre for Research and Studies in Management. He currently serves as president of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE). He joined Hydro-Québec in 1972 and held increasingly senior positions, including deputy chief executive officer and chief financial officer. From 2001 to 2006, he was president of Hydro-Québec Distribution, and subsequently president of Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie. Mr. Filion has served as chair and member of various boards and is a fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
The Montreal Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage the Port of Montreal, effective March 1, 1999, under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the Montreal Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.
The Port of Montreal is one of the busiest inland ports in the world and a key transfer point for transatlantic cargo. The port is also one of Canada's top container ports and a leader in terms of market share for metric tonnes of containerized cargo in Quebec, Ontario, and the United States Midwest and Northeast. Over the last ten years, the Port of Montreal has handled an average of 20 million tonnes of cargo annually.
