Canada's New Government issues a Call for Proposals for projects to advance the full participation of people with disabilities

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, May 4, 2007 — The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced a Call for Proposals with approximately $1.1 million in funding for projects that help people with disabilities fully participate in society.
"Canada's New Government is working to enhance the quality of life for all Canadians and today, we are proud to announce approximately $1.1 million in funding to help people with disabilities fully participate in society," said Minister Solberg. "By strengthening the foundation of organizations in the social non-profit sector and fostering partnerships, we can work together to help people with disabilities build a better and stronger future."
Since the Social Development Partnership Program - Disability Component started, $107 million has been invested to support a range of community-based initiatives. These initiatives create opportunities and increase the effectiveness of the federal government and the non-profit sector in meeting the social development needs and aspirations of people with disabilities.
Proposals submitted under this Call must meet the program criteria and fall under one of two streams: Social Development Projects and the Accommodation Fund. Social Development Projects will focus on seniors with disabilities, youth with disabilities, or the promotion of accessibility, with preference being given to projects that enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities living in rural and remote areas. The Accommodation Fund will focus on projects that assist with making events more accessible so that people with disabilities can participate.
