72 hours…Is your family prepared?
If an emergency happens in our community, it may take first responders some time to get to you as they help those in desperate need. By taking a few simple steps today, we can all become better prepared to face a range of emergencies – anytime, anywhere.
The 12th annual Emergency Preparedness Week (May 6-12, 2007), encourages us to be prepared to cope on our own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency.
Most disasters are beyond our control. But with a little planning and preparation, there are ways we can minimize the impact on ourselves and our families. Here are a few simple things we can do:

Know the risks –although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help us better prepare.
Make a plan – Every Canadian household needs an emergency plan. It will help you and your family know what to do if disaster strikes. We should all practice what to do in different emergency situations.
Prepare a kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. We should all be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Should the unexpected happen, the RCMP will be there to help Canadians. However, emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility. The RCMP encourages all Canadians to take some time during this Emergency Preparedness Week to become better prepared so that we can make our homes and our communities a safer place to live.
