OTTAWAIn parallel with Scene Quebec, Rideau Hall hosted a special Art Matters forum on May 2, 2007, in collaboration with the Institut du Nouveau Monde.
The Institut presented the results of the discussions that took place as part of its Rendez-vous stratégique on Quebec culture. Thirty people from various cultural backgrounds in Canada debated the recommendations that stemmed from those discussions. The Institut's report is available online at www.inm.qc.ca.
The public is invited to join in on the debate at www.citizenvoices.gg.ca.
The Institut du Nouveau Monde is an independent, non-profit organization that encourages citizen participation and promotes the strengthening of social ties and the development of democratic institutions to stimulate a renewal of ideas and public debates in Quebec. It ended its Rendez-vous stratégique on culture with a national meeting in Montreal on April 28 and 29, 2007.
Art MattersThe Governor General's arts awards ceremonies offer an opportunity to bring together Canada's artistic and cultural creators. His Excellency Jean‑Daniel Lafond introduced the Art Matters forums as a means of examining artistic practices and discussing the changes and challenges that they face. The purpose of these forums, which are held in conjunction with arts awards ceremonies, is to start a dialogue and create a space to reflect on the arts.
Forums have taken place at Rideau Hall and all across Canada as part of the Governor General's official visits to the provinces and territories. Art Matters forums delve beyond politics and funding and create a vantage point from which to observe a culture in motion.
