Minister Day Calls on All Canadians to Remember Canada's Missing Children on May 25

OTTAWA, May 25, 2007 – Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released the following statement to mark National Missing Children’s Day:“There is no greater fear for a parent than the possibility of a missing child. Today is an important day to remember not only children who have gone missing but also their loved ones.Canada’s New Government, together with its provincial and territorial counterparts, is working to prevent child abductions and reunite missing children with their rightful guardians through the Our Missing Children program www.ourmissingchildren.gc.ca.The program is a collaborative effort of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Department of Justice. On the evening of May 25th, I encourage all Canadians to turn on their porch lights to support ‘Light the Way Home’, a campaign held on this day every year by the Missing Children Society of Canada. A porch light shining brightly this evening shows our support and hope for the safe return of missing children to their families.Along with my counterparts at the G8 Summit today in Munich, I addressed the issue of sexual exploitation, which is linked to child abductions. All ministers wore a blue flower on their jacket in honour of Missing Children Day.Canada made a commitment to work with the other G8 countries to combat this heinous crime. This commitment found expression in the Concluding Declaration that I signed on behalf of Canada along with all other G8 Ministers.
