OTTAWA - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities,
today announced the appointment of Mr. D. Ian Glen, Q.C. as chair of the Canadian Air Transport
Security Authority (CATSA) board of directors.
"I am pleased that Mr. Glen has accepted this leadership role as
CATSA chair," said Minister
Cannon. "His extensive legal and senior management experience will serve the Authority well."
Mr. Glen holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Guelph, and a bachelor of laws from Queen’s
University. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1973 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1986.
He began his legal career in private practice in Huntsville, Ontario and subsequently worked for the
Department of Justice from 1975 until 1987, when he was appointed Assistant Deputy Solicitor General,
responsible for Police and Security in the Department of the Solicitor General. Mr. Glen went on to
serve in a number of senior management positions in the federal government, including Associate Deputy
Minister of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Operations),
Deputy Minister of Environment Canada, and Chief, Communications Security Establishment. Prior to retiring
from the Public Service in 2006, he was the chairperson of the National Parole Board. Mr. Glen has been
appointed CATSA chair for a term
of five years.
CATSA, established on April 1, 2002,
is a federal Crown corporation that operates on a not-for-profit basis. It is responsible for the provision
of key air security services such as: pre-board screening of passengers and their belongings; random screening
of non-passengers; acquisition, deployment and maintenance of explosives detection equipment at airports; management
of federal contributions for airport policing related to civil aviation security initiatives; and contracting of
police on board aircraft. CATSA is also responsible
for the development and implementation of a restricted area identity card incorporating biometric features.
