Assembly of First Nations and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sign Public Safety Protocol

News Release

Since the earliest days of the Northwest Mounted Police in the 1870's, the RCMP has developed a unique and important relationship with Aboriginal peoples living in Canada. Today, this relationship expands to crime prevention through social development, the ongoing delivery of culturally competent policing services and ongoing consultation with the communities to ensure their needs are being met.

The first Public Safety Protocol between the RCMP and the Assembly of First Nations was originally signed in May, 2004 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to proactively address public safety within First Nations communities.
This week’s renewal and enhancement of the Public Safety Protocol represents our mutual commitment to strengthening our long-standing relations based on trust and our commitment to keeping our Aboriginal communities safe.
Serving Aboriginal communities is one of the RCMP's strategic priorities.
