DAWSON CITY, Yukon, June 21, 2007 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), has announced $30,000 in funding for two Yukon arts organizations. The funding being announced today, on National Aboriginal Day, will help support the Dawson City Arts Society and the Dawson City Music Festival Association in presenting their 2007-2008 cultural events.
"Canada's New Government is pleased to support the Dawson City Arts Society and the Dawson City Music Festival Association. By offering quality programming throughout the year, these organizations ensure access to performing arts for residents and visitors of Dawson," said Minister Oda. "They contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of the Yukon, as well as to the development of Canadian artists."
"Once again this year, Dawson City arts organizations will present top-notch performances that highlight talented local and visiting artists," said Secretary of State Ritz. "We are proud to support organizations that showcase our artists and enhance the cultural scene in Yukon."
"Funding from Canadian Heritage has a direct impact on our community's cultural life through the Arts Presentation Canada program," said Evelyn Pollock, programs manager of the Dawson City Arts Society. "It connects us to the rich Canadian performing arts scene, and assists us in presenting music, theatre and dance from across the country here in our remote northern town."
The Dawson City Arts Society will receive $7,500 for its annual, multi-disciplinary performing arts series that will take place from April 2007 to March 2008. Featuring established and emerging artists, the series will include performances ranging from classical, jazz and world music, to dance, comedy, theatre and Aboriginal arts. School concerts and workshops will also reach out to young audiences and provide valuable learning experiences.
The Dawson City Music Festival Association will receive $22,500 to present its 29th annual festival from July 20 to 22, 2007. The festival will feature local, national and international artists who will engage in a variety of concerts, workshops and dances. The event will also include a full slate of family and children's activities.
Canada's New Government has provided this funding under the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other arts experiences.
