Counterfeit Construction Equipment Seized by the RCMP

Sherbrooke, Friday, June 15, 2007 – Tuesday, the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police put a stop to the illicit activities of a man who is believed
to be involved in the counterfeiting of engines, generators and gardening
equipment. The suspect, a 33-year-old man, could face charges of trade-mark
infringement.
The RCMP Estrie Detachment federal officers searched a residence and
a warehouse in Sherbrooke as part of an operation named "Cylindre".
Twenty-one chain saws, seven generators, eight brush cutters, as well
as hedge trimmers and small engines were seized.

Most of the items seized were made in China. The suspect allegedly sold
these items after he modified the manufacturers’ labels leading
consumers to believe that they were renowned brand names such as Jonsered,
Yamaha, Honda, Mitsubishi and Komatsu. The tools were sold on a classified
ads site on the Internet.
The Sherbrooke man could be summoned shortly to appear in court on charges
of trade-mark infringement and/or distributing infringing copies of a
copyright work under the Copyright Act.
The investigation was conducted by the RCMP Estrie Detachment Federal
Investigation Section, which is responsible for enforcing federal statutes
regarding copyright, trade-mark and radiocommunication. The officers assigned
to this section investigate cases of illegal reproduction and distribution
of works protected by law.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police invites citizens to report any information
on illegal activities by local individuals or groups involved in such
