Ottawa, Ontario, June 14, 2007... The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced today that the recently completed tax-filing season showed that the majority of Canadians continue to use electronic filing as their method of choice. To date, over 23.6 million tax returns have been filed, with the average refund being $1,254.26.
Electronic filing is the fastest and easiest way to prepare and file tax returns. The most popular methods, EFILE and NETFILE, recorded a combined increase of 5.2% compared to 2006. Paper filing continues to decrease, recording a 4.3% decline from 2006.
With the filing season now complete for many Canadians, the CRA would like to remind self‑employed individuals, that they have until Friday, June 15, 2007, to file their income tax returns. If there was an outstanding balance for 2006, it had to be paid on or before April 30, 2007, to avoid interest. A late-filing penalty on amounts owing will apply to returns received or postmarked after June 15, 2007.
