Governor General Honours Correctional Officers for Bravery

Ottawa, June 15, 2007 — The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, issued the following statement today regarding two correctional officers receiving the Medal of Bravery from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.“On behalf of Canada’s New Government I am very pleased today to offer my congratulations to Wayne Bhnisch and Joe Sinclair for their act of bravery while working with the United Nations in Kosovo in March 2004.By taking quick action when faced with an armed prisoner, Mr. Bhinsch and Mr. Sinclair risked their lives to ensure the safety of others. It is this type of selfless dedication that characterizes the men and women who work on the front line of corrections in the interest of public safety. Their devotion to duty and community service is inspiring. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the police officers and the men, women and youth from across Canada who were similarly honoured today for their acts of courage.
