Minister Prentice Shares Mayer Report on Nunavut Devolution

Ottawa, Ontario (June 12, 2007) - The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today released The Mayer Report on Nunavut Devolution. This report outlines the challenges and opportunities faced by Nunavut today.

Mr. Paul Mayer was engaged by Minister Prentice in November 2006 to work with the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated to research issues relating to Nunavut devolution and to advise the Minister on approaches and considerations for successful devolution negotiations.
“Paul Mayer, my representative for Nunavut devolution, met with leaders and officials of the federal and territorial governments as well as with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and discussed interests, priorities and approaches that will lead to successful devolution negotiations,” said Minister Prentice. “The information contained in his report will make it possible to decide on the next steps of the devolution process.”
Since the 1970s, the Government of Canada has gradually transferred province-like powers to territorial governments in order to support the political evolution of the territories and provide greater local decision-making and accountability. Nunavut devolution would transfer the administration and control over public lands and resources from the federal government to the Government of Nunavut.
